Long a legendary figure of the British stage whose appearances movies and television were rare. I first saw him in a BBC production DYING DAY. Then I was lucky enough to see his one-man show ACTING SHAKESPEARE at the University of Virginia. Come 1990, he took on more film roles, from a glorious Amos Starkadder in COLD COMFORT FARM to RICHARD III to, of course, Magneto in X MEN and Gandalf in LORD OF THE RINGS. There’s no one like him.
